When does the mid-season begin?

The mid-season is one of the most eagerly awaited periods for hunters in Spain. This period, which allows the hunting of certain species outside the general season, varies in dates and regulations depending on each autonomous community. Knowing the exact dates and specific regulations of each region is crucial to practice hunting legally and responsibly.

In this blog, we offer you a complete guide on the start of the mid-season in each autonomous community. From the northern regions such as Galicia and the Basque Country, to the southern ones such as Andalusia and Murcia, passing through central communities such as Castilla y León or Castilla-La Mancha, here you will find all the information you need to plan your hunting season.

Mid-season in Andalusia

Rabbit: 11 August - 24 November. Hunting by hand is permitted until 29 December. Hunting is permitted on Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Hunting by hand is permitted every day.

Quail, pigeons and corvids: 22 August - 28 September, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. In the coastal area of ​​Cadiz, hunting is allowed from 1 September to 15 September every day.

Burrowing Dogs: August 11 to February 9 on Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Additional notes:

  1. Rabbit : Dogs may be used from 11 August. This may be extended until 15 December, only on Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, on land where there is habitual damage to agriculture, provided that it is expressly authorised in the technical hunting plan. From 1 to 24 November the maximum quota will be 3 pieces per hunter per day.
  2. Pigeons : The pigeons that can be hunted during the mid-season are wood pigeons and wild pigeons.
  3. Aquatic : In accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 581/2001, the possession and use of ammunition containing lead is prohibited during hunting and sport shooting in wet areas.

Mid-season in the Canary Islands

The authorized game species are the rabbit, the common quail, the Barbary partridge and the rock pigeon. Shotgun hunting is prohibited on national holidays, except when they fall on Thursdays or Sundays.

Rabbit with dog and ferret: August 4 to November 24.

Common quail: first 5 Sundays of shotgun opening.

Mid-season in Cantabria

From 21 August to 10 September 2024, inclusive. During this period, only hunting of quail, magpie, carrion crow and wood pigeon is permitted.

The hunting hours during the mid-season will be between 6:45 and 21:15. Within the different hunting periods for each species and/or type, hunting is only permitted on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and national or regional holidays.

Mid-season in Catalonia

Hunting during the mid-season may only be carried out in special regime hunting reserves that have been approved by their PTGC.

Working days for quail, wood pigeon, heron and common starling: 25 August and 1, 8 and 15 September, except in the Lleida district and the Cerdanya and Solsonès regions, which are Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays in the period between 21 August and 10 September, both included.

Working days for the wild pigeon , including domestic and hybrid varieties, are: September 1 and 8, except in the demarcation of Lleida and the regions of Cerdanya and Solsonès, which are Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays in the period between September 1 and 10, both included.

Mid-season in Galicia

Quail: 24 August and 15 September on Saturdays and Sundays, either by jumping or by hand. Requires express authorisation from the head of the territorial management body responsible for nature conservation of the Ourense Department of Environment, Territory and Housing.

Mid-season in the Balearic Islands

The Order maintains the moratorium on hunting the European turtle dove for another season and two species of duck (the pintail and the tufted duck) are banned due to the decline of these populations both at European and local level. In addition, this year the hunting of the collared dove will not be permitted, since it is not considered a game species in Spain.

Rabbit: hunting with a shotgun, bow or falconry birds, without dogs or auxiliary equipment, will be allowed from 23 June. From 25 June, hunting with the traditional Ibizan hound method will be allowed. Rabbit hunting will be allowed until 1 December and may be extended until 29 December with the authorisation of the hunting ground owner.

Hare: hunting of hares with a shotgun will be permitted only on 18 and 25 August, with a maximum catch of one hare per hunter per day. In addition, if any breed of hunting dog accidentally catches a hare, the hunter will be allowed to take it with him.

Mid-season in La Rioja

The hunting season will begin in the region on August 15, with the opening of the mid-season, which can be carried out on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays and will last until September 6 for all authorized species except the wood pigeon , whose period begins on August 20.

Mid-season in Navarra

Quail: In the Southern Zone, from August 15 to September 15, 2024, on Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and national, regional or local holidays, within the areas established in the Hunting Management Plans.

In the Northern Zone, from August 15 to September 15, 2024, on Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and national, regional or local holidays, on all fenced-off areas, always outside of wooded areas.

Wood pigeon: from 22 August to 15 September 2024, on Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and national, regional or local holidays. In the reserves of the South Zone, only when jumping in the quail zone and from a pigeon flight position.

In the reserves of the Northern Zone, only jumping is allowed outside of wooded areas.

Mid-season in the Basque Country

Hunting will be allowed every day of the week from 25 August to 22 September , inclusive. During this period, the species that can be hunted are : quail, wood pigeon, rock pigeon, magpie and carrion crow . The quail will have a quota of 10 specimens and the pigeons of 4, while corvids can be shot without a quota.

Mid-season in Aragon

Quail: August 15 to third Sunday in September. Maximum quota: thirty specimens per hunter per day. 2.

Wood pigeon and magpie: from August 21 to the third Sunday in September. 3.

Mallard in specific municipalities: August 15 to third Sunday in September.

Wild pigeon and its different breeds and varieties: September 1 to third Sunday in September.

Mid-season in Castilla La Mancha

The half-season will begin on August 20th and will continue until September 15th, when quail, wood pigeon and magpie can be hunted (until September 21st). More details by province HERE .

Mid-season in Castile and Leon

From August 15 to the third Sunday in September, the following species may be hunted: quail, magpie, crow, rabbit and fox .

From August 25 to the third Sunday in September, the following species may also be hunted: wood pigeon and rock pigeon .

Mid-season in the Valencian Community

In general, hunting will be allowed on August 21, with the exception of the European turtledove, stock dove, garganey and jackdaw. The hunting season for summer migratory birds in fixed positions will begin on Wednesday, August 21 and end on September 15, 2024.

The mid-season begins on 15 August and ends on 8 September 2024 ( quail, mallard, common starling, jackdaw, magpie and fox ); wood pigeons and rock pigeons from 22 August to 8 September.
