Learn to differentiate optics

Once the season of hunts, hunts and hooks is over, all of us hunters already have our minds set on stalking the forest elf or waiting for wild boar damage. An animal that is causing a lot of problems in our geography due to the drastic increase in its population. It is estimated that in Spain, the population is 1,200,000 individuals and that without good management, it could double in just two years. One of the solutions could be to lengthen the hunting season or allow the use of thermal and night devices for greater effectiveness. But… Do we know the differences between these devices?

Binoculars, monoculars and scopes are optical instruments used in hunting to expand vision and facilitate tracking animals. However, there are some important differences between these three types of devices that are important to know in order to choose the most suitable one for your needs.

Binoculars

Binoculars are the most common optical instruments for hunting. They are made up of two parallel optical tubes that allow you to see a double image of the same object. This provides a greater sense of depth and realism, which is ideal for hunting moving animals. Binoculars usually have a magnification of between 7x and 10x, although there are models that can achieve higher magnifications. The diameter of the lens is also important, as it determines the field of view. Binoculars with a larger diameter objective lens offer a wider field of view, but are also heavier and bulkier.

Monoculars

Monoculars are optical devices that only have one tube. This makes them lighter and more compact than binoculars, making them ideal for hunting in tight spaces or when a free hand is needed.

Monoculars usually have a magnification similar to that of binoculars, although there are also models with higher magnifications. The diameter of the objective is also important, but in monoculars it is even more decisive, since it determines both the field of view and the luminosity of the image.

Viewers

Scopes are optical devices that attach to a firearm. They are used to increase the accuracy of the shot, since they allow you to see the target in greater detail.

Scopes usually have magnifications between 2x and 12x, although there are models that can reach higher magnifications. The diameter of the objective is also important, as it determines the field of view and the brightness of the image.

Thermal and Night

Thermal and night scopes are two types of optical instruments used in hunting to see in the dark. However, there are some important differences between both types of scopes that are important to know to choose the most suitable one for your needs.

Thermal scopes

Thermal scopes work by capturing infrared radiation emitted by objects. This radiation is invisible to the human eye, but thermal scopes convert it into a visible image. Thermal scopes have several advantages over night scopes. First, they are more sensitive to light, allowing them to see in more extreme dark conditions. Second, they provide a more detailed picture, making it easier to identify targets.

Night vision

Night vision scopes work by amplifying visible light. This allows them to see in low light conditions, but not in total darkness. Night scopes have some advantages over thermal scopes. First of all, they are cheaper. Secondly, they are lighter and more compact, making them easier to transport.
