Hunting Techniques for October: Stalking Deer in the Rutting Season

The deer hunting season begins during its rutting season, a time when numerous fans seek to capture this majestic creature.

Determining a precise date for the onset of the rut can be challenging, although it generally runs from early September to mid-October. However, variables such as climate and latitude of the region can significantly influence this period.

One of the most used strategies to attract deer is to use your own call. Imitating their characteristic calls can fool them into believing that a rival intends to dispute control of their group of females. In response, deer will move closer to the source of these sounds. This is not the only effective tactic, as there are many others that we will detail in this article.

Hunting ruts requires preparation that begins weeks before the event. This involves carefully studying the hunting terrain, identifying the entry and exit points of the deer, as well as the strategic places from which the large hunting areas can be observed.

Stay tuned, as at Armería Carril we will provide you with valuable tips for hunting deer during this year's rut.

What motivates the rutting?

The rut is a manifestation of the beginning of the mating season, when males eagerly come in search of females in heat. If a female is not courted by any male, she will restart her reproductive cycle and be able to conceive at a later date.

For this to happen, it is essential that the male is in the right place at the right time, close to the females, defending his territory in anticipation of their arrival.

The rutting spectacle occurs when one male attempts to take over another's territory, triggering a violent confrontation that, although rarely causing serious injury, demonstrates territorial supremacy. The winner of this battle secures their right to remain in the area and pass on their genes to the next generation.

When night falls, deer emit their characteristic calls, marking their territory and attracting females.

Planning for hunting during the rut

The intensity and duration of the rut is unpredictable, so it is also crucial to take into account weather forecasts, especially regarding rain and other weather changes, when determining the hunting area.

During the rut, hunting only takes place at dawn or dusk, when it is possible to hear the cries that indicate the location of the deer and sneak up on them to shoot them.

Before embarking on deer hunting during the rut season, it is essential to carefully inspect the terrain. Despite familiarity with the area due to previous hunting, there can always be changes in the landscape, such as alterations to nearby water points, such as ponds or rivers.

All of these factors play an important role in the dynamics of deer confrontations, so it is essential to understand them and make the most of them.

Identification of deer during the rut

An expert hunter must be able to interpret the terrain, observing the footprints and trails present in it. The size and shape of the tracks provide clues to the species, its size, and its approximate age. Analyzing these tracks allows us to determine whether the animal was walking calmly or at full speed, and even if it was a young or adult specimen.

In addition to tracks on the ground, rub marks and the freshness of droppings can be valuable indicators in identifying the presence of deer. The clearings in the forest are also points of interest for observation.

In the last days of the rut, deer are usually exhausted, so it is common to find them resting in the shade or even in broad daylight.

Discovering places where they feed or drink can also be beneficial. Although it is easier to identify the places frequented by females, males usually remain near them during this time of year.

Movement without being detected

A skilled hunter in the rut must be able to move stealthily, taking advantage of the loud bellowing of the males to make strategic movements. Taking frequent breaks is essential to familiarize yourself with the terrain and determine the origin of the bellowing. Finding an elevated spot on a hillside, with the sun at your back, makes deer viewing easier and improves your chances of success.

The strategy involves stealthily approaching the selected male, taking advantage of his relative distraction due to the mating season.

Another tactic is to wait, knowing that during the middle of the day the deer tend to be less active, while as evening falls they start moving again. Hiding in areas conducive to observation without being discovered before the animals arrive is essential.

Strategic points for these waits can be squares or clearings in the forest, places where deer tend to go during the rut.

What equipment is needed for the rut?

As for weapons, it is advisable to choose a rifle suitable for stalking hunting in general. The bolt must have a sensitive trigger and precise regulation so that the hunter can fully focus on aiming. It is also essential to have quality binoculars, similar to those of the scope.

We cannot forget the decoy, an essential tool in hunting deer during the rut. This call extraordinary imitates the call of the deer during this period, which increases the chances of success in the hunt.
