The roe deer's rut, when it starts and recommendations

Once the does are in full lambing season, the first cycle of roe deer hunting ends. The bucks become very elusive and no longer appear in the places where they were usually seen with the does. This may lead some to think they have abandoned the hunting ground or have fallen victim to poaching, but in reality, they have been "swallowed up by the earth." Until the rutting season, they will be difficult to find. This blog explores the fascinating period of the roe deer rut, its importance in hunting, and the ethical and management considerations that must be taken into account.

The Mating Season

The roe deer rut in Spain occurs primarily between late July and mid-August. During this period, bucks become more active and respond more frequently to calls due to their reproductive instinct. Understanding the phases of the rut and roe deer behavior is crucial for successful hunting.

Phases of the Roe Deer Rut

Pre-Heat

Start : Mid-July.

Behavior : Males begin to show an increase in territorial activity, marking their areas and monitoring the movements of females.

Calls : During this phase, calls can be effective in attracting males who are actively seeking females or in establishing territorial dominance.

Main Zeal

Peak of the Rut : Approximately from late July to early August.

Behavior : Males are at their most active, chasing females and responding aggressively to other males. It is common to see males and females forming mating circles around specific areas, such as clearings and meadows.

Calling : This is the most effective phase for using calls, as bucks are more likely to respond to sounds that mimic the call of a doe in heat. However, care must be taken not to overuse the call, as this will prevent the roe deer from becoming accustomed to it.

Post-Heat

Completion : From mid to late August.

Behavior : Rutting activity decreases, and bucks begin to reduce their aggression and movement. Unsuccessful roe deer may still respond to calls, but less frequently.

Calls : During this phase, calls may primarily attract young bucks or those that have not found females in heat. This is a good opportunity to attract and select specific animals that should not be bred.

Management Considerations

Hunting during the rutting season can be controversial due to the vulnerability of bucks. It is important to follow local laws and regulations and hunt ethically to avoid negatively impacting the roe deer population. Responsible management includes:

  • Selection of Specimens : Prefer to hunt young or old males that do not contribute significantly to reproduction.
  • Respect for Wildlife : Avoid overhunting and consider the impact of each hunt on the local population.

Hunting Techniques During the Rut

Calling roe deer during the rut is a practice that combines specific techniques, knowledge of animal behavior, and a profound respect for nature. The use of calls must be strategic and measured so as not to desensitize the animals. It is crucial to understand that success in this type of hunting depends not only on the hunter's skill but also on detailed knowledge of roe deer behavior and the phases of the rut.
